ELSA

The aim of ELSA is to conduct world-class research to further the understanding and promotion of healthy ageing.

Dr Michelle A Miller leads research funded by the ESRC looking at the effect of sleep on cognition and is involved with studies investigating genetic factors in the ELSA population.

Dr Michelle A Miller holds is an Honorary Senior Research Associate position at University College London (UCL).

The English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (ELSA) data set

The English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (ELSA) was set up by investigators at UCL and is about the lives of people in England who are aged 50 and over (and their partners).

The study covers a broad range of topics such as people's health, economic situation and quality of life and it will help us learn about how people's experiences vary and how their circumstances change over time.

Members of the study are visited every two years (data and biological sampling). The ELSA datasets and associated documentation for Wave 0 (i.e. HSE) and Waves 1, 2, 3 , 4 and 5 are all available on the Economic and Social Data Service.

DNA Repository

During the ELSA Wave2 nurse visit, blood was taken for individuals who consented for subsequent DNA extraction. This had led to the establishment of th eELSA DNA Repository (EDNAR). Applications for DNA/DNA analyses can be made to Dr Meena Kumari at UCL.

Dr Michelle A Miller is a member of the EDNAR genetics sub-committee, which evaluates all EDNAR applications.
