My research interests are varied but linked by one common theme - the patient. My initial interest surfaced when working as a health visitor I became interested in Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. My dissertation and subsequent doctorate were on exploring the development of circadian rhythms in new born infants. My dissertation compared the impact of immunisation and minor illness of the overnight deep body temperature patterns of infants. My doctorate examined the development of temperature, heart rate and cortisol in infants who had experienced intrauterine growth retardation. More recently my work has focussed on interprofessional education and service user experience and focuses on identifying how to ensure that undergraduate and postgraduate students learn 'with, from and about each other' in order to improve team work within practice to improve collaboration and so enhance service users experience. I am also interested and have developed several e learning service users learning objects for use in uni and interprofessional groups.
I trained as a nurse at St Thomas's Hospital London, qualifying in 1978. I completed my midwifery training and Special and Intensive Care of the Newborn at Coventry Maternity Hospital. I worked as a Midwifery Sister before leaving to train as a Health Visitor in the 1980's obtaining a distinction. I gained a Diploma in Professional Studies in Nursing and my first degree at De Montfort University, my higher degree at the Faculty of Medicine and Biological Sciences, Leicester University. I was seconded to Warwick University when Leicester Warwick Medical School was established and joined Warwick Medical School as an Associate Professor in Interprofessional Education. I was awarded the Butterworth Memorial Warwick Teaching Excellence award in 2008 and has recently co-edited a book ( with my colleague Patricia Bluteau, Coventry University) titled 'Interprofessional Education- Making in happen'.
