Aims and Learning Outcomes

Learn to
  • Help health care professionals understand ethical theory, codes of ethics, and the relationship between ethics and law; and how these inform ethical decisions in health care practice
  • Provide health care professionals with the skills to identify ethical issues in their practice and to take part in the process of resolving ethical conflict
  • Discuss ethical dilemmas in relation to key areas of health care including, end of life care, reproductive medicine, resource allocation, treatment of children, and mental health
Outcomes
  • Demonstrable understanding of ethical theory, codes of ethics, principles and values in health care ethics
  • Awareness of the range of ethical issues that arise in health care practice, research and education
  • Ability to analyse ethical difficulties arising in health care practice, and justify ethically acceptable solutions
  • Ability to discuss ethical theory and practice in relation to the law
