This module aims to introduce the students to the principles of commissioning and some of the leadership skills needed to do this.
This course will introduce you to basic commissioning skills, develop leadership skills and an understanding of how primary care fits into the healthcare structure.

After attending this module, you should be able:

  • to understand the structure and function of the NHS and the financial basis of commissioning healthcare
  • to have a clear understanding of the principles of integrated healthcare commissioning
  • to understand the legal frameworks and responsibilities around commissioning and quality assurance when commissioning new services.
  • to have an understanding of what leadership skills need to be developed
  • to develop skills in negotiation and change management
  • to have a clear understanding of how evidence and values come together to support healthcare commissioning
