This module will provide you with a sound knowledge of basic physiology, anatomy and pharmacology of both the normal and abnormal neonate/child. An understanding of law related to children and related effective communication. The identification of the sick child; initial treatment and safe transfer of that child.
Learning outcomes
At the end of this course the student will be able to:
- understand the differences in anatomy, physiology and pharmacology between neonate/child and adult
- identify medico-legal issues related to children. How to effectively communicate with both parents and children
- the ability to identify a sick child, initiate treatment and arrange safe transfer.
Module syllabus
This module will consist of 30 hours of structured learning activity, as lectures and seminars over 1 week.
- anatomy, physiology and pharmacology of the neonate/child
- congenital problems and syndromes
- congenital cardiac problems and what it means to the anaesthetist/clinician
- effective communication
- consent
- child protection
- management of a paediatric service in a non-specialist hospital
- acute pain service
- core topics by paediatricians
- airway emergencies
- sepsis – meningococcal etc
- neonatal anaesthesia and anaesthesia for the under 12 months in the DGH
- recognition of the sick child
- resuscitation and stabilisation of the sick child
- setting up for retrieval
- when you have to transfer – time critical transfers (head injuries)
- Paediatric Life Support.
