Group Prize and Summer 2022 BAD Elective prize/project grant winner - Andrew Zhao

Congratulations to final year student Andrew Zhao for accepting a group prize on-stage at the British Association of Dermatologist’s (BAD) annual meeting, for his co-authoring of the project: A UK-wide study to describe resource consumption and waste management in skin surgery including Mohs micrographic surgery. As part of the steering group, Andrew oversaw the data analysis and statistical write-up for the paper, which has now been published in Clinical and Experimental Dermatology.

During his time at WMS, Andrew has also received a student grant/prize from the BAD for a separate solo project on best practices in dermatological surgery, which took him to multiple departments across the UK.

“Sustainability and dermatology are two things I’m passionate about so I’m happy to have contributed to this national project. Being a mathematics undergraduate has been big selling point for getting involved in research , and I think the diversity is one of the advantages of being a grad medic from Warwick”

Andrew will be starting his F1 in NW London as he pursues a career in clinical dermatology and research. We wish him all the best!

Congratulations to Hannah Reichel who has won the George Lewith Prize for General Practice by the NIHR School for Primary Care Research.

“I was very pleased to receive the George Lewith Prize, an undergraduate primary care research prize, for my SSC2-based project “The impact of NHS England guidance on primary care prescribing of simple analgesia”.

In March 2018, NHS England published guidance for Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) to encourage implementation of policy to reduce primary care prescriptions of medications that are available over-the-counter. My project aimed to evaluate the impact of this guidance on the prescribing rate of simple analgesia. Additionally, we determined this guidance did not appear to create a health inequality based on socioeconomic status and we explored the response to the guidance from every CCG by Freedom of Information requests, particularly looking at education, incentives and enforcement.

Since completing the SSC2 module, I have presented the findings at SW SAPC 2020, an academic primary care conference, and we are now working towards publication.

I would like to thank my supervisor, Saran Shantikumar for his continued support and guidance throughout this entire project.”
