EPSRC Life Science Interface DTC Conference 2006

This was the first EPSRC Life Science Interface (LSI) Doctoral Training Centre (DTC) student conference, held at St. Anne's College, Oxford, 24th-25th July 2006.

The theme of the conference was clear communication of scientific ideas. You may also like to see the event webpage.

The conference was organised by PhD students Cat White and Stephen Mayhew from Oxford's LSI DTC, and Lewis Dartnell and Trevor Graham from UCL's CoMPLEX DTC.

Communicating Science With Impact

After a delayed start due to train delays affecting many of the students, UCL's Steve Millar chaired a session including a group session on how to write a science newspaper article about our own research.

Scientific Speed Dating

The students were not paired off for romance, but to practice giving a two minute "elevator sales pitch" about their research to another scientist.

Conference Dinner

The evening's entertainment was held in a large marquee, followed by a talk on flocking and other animal group behaviour by keynote speaker Iain Couzin and a Pub Quiz.

Student Talks

During the morning one student from each of the six DTC's gave a talk about their research (abstracts available here). A prize for the best talk was awarded to MOAC's Adair Richards, awarded by Dr. Gavin Salisbury of the EPSRC:

Science Careers - What Next?

For the afternoon session, we had talks from a range of former PhD students in a session chaired by Dr. Sheema Sharma of ScienceCareers.
