NOMADS: NOvel MAterials for ADvanced Spintronics

Wednesday, 19th & 20th October 2016

Department of Physics, University of Warwick

Organisers: A. Datta, G.Bell, G. Morley, and R.A. Römer (Physics, Warwick)

Background and Purpose

Spin is a fundamental quantum property of matter. Just as electric charge, it can be exploited to induce relaxation and transport processes. The field of spintronics hence deals with the possibility of harnessing spin for studies of fundamental physics as well as technological applications. Indeed, giant-magnetoresistive (GMR) metal-sandwich structures have for years now provided much of the storage requirements of our modern, informationhungry society. While improvements of GMR-based devices are on-going, a more radical approach is seeking to enhance the ways in which we generate and utilize spin-polarized currents. Using semiconductors as a new material class is a particularly promising avenue of research and has the additional advantage that it could readily combine with existing integrated circuit technology. A more long-term goal of spintronics is the harnessing of electron and nuclear spin for quantum information processing and quantum computing - a spin being close to an ideal quantum bit. However, in order to attain such a long-term goal, a new generation of scientists will have to be educated beyond the still largely charge-based solid-state physics and engineering courses currently on offer in most European research universities.
Here at Warwick, with the Midlands Physics Graduate School and the Integrated Magnetic Resonance Centre for Doctoral Training, we already have much of the necessary postgraduate infrastructure in place to facilitate such training. Hence, together with a number of European partners, we are aiming to apply for the January 2017 round of Innovative Training Networks (ITNs) via a European Training Network (ETN) application.
