Collective Behaviour In Growing Systems

Main Website: http://people.bath.ac.uk/ma3tcr/cbgs/index.html

Date: 18th and 19th November 2014

Venue: University of Bath, UK

Organisers: Richard Morris (Warwick) and Tim Rogers (Bath)

Overview

A two-day knowledge-sharing workshop on the subject of collective dynamics in out-of-equilibrium systems driven by growth. Part of the EPSRC Network+ on Emergence and Physics far from Equilibrium.

About the event

Growth is an important driver of non-equilibrium dynamics in a wide range of systems. Examples belong to a range of application areas, including bacteria, cancerous tumors, financial markets, cities and even galaxies. Nevertheless, the overarching challenge (both for theoretical and simulation-based research) is typically the same: to understand the interaction between growth mechanisms and the internal dynamics of the system.

Supported by the EPSRC Network+ on Emergence and Physics far from Equilibrium, the purpose of this event is to bring together a community of people who share the same broad research aims, but would not always attend the same workshops. Specifically, we imagine an intensive knowledge-sharing event designed to explore the common challenges faced by researchers who use either different techniques, or, work in different application areas. This is not a traditional conference with talks that exclusively promote recent research. Instead, the goal of the workshop is to cement the idea of a common goal, identify new directions for research and, ideally, nucleate new collaborations.

Venue and Travel Information

The talks on Tuesady 18 November will take place in the Wolfson Lecture Theatre, building 4 West, room 1.7, and on Wednesday 19 November in 3 East 2.2 (click for the campus map). Click for information about travelling to the University and nearby hotels.

Registration and financial support

Official registration is now closed. However, we have a very limited number of spaces left, therefore if you would like to attend and have not yet registered, please contact either Richard Morris (r dot g dot morris at warwick dot ac dot uk) or Tim Rogers (t dot c dot rogers at bath dot ac dot uk).

Financial support for travel and accommodation expenses is available for members of the EPSRC Network+ on Emergence and Physics far from Equilibrium. Travel expenses will be reimbursed up to a maximum of £75.00 for UK participants, along with accommodation charges up to a maximum of £85.00 per person per night. As usual train tickets should be standard class, and the total expenses for travel, subsistence and accommodation must not exceed £160 per participant. Lunches for registered participants will be provided free of charge. Unfortunately we cannot offer financial support for research students.
