This course will provide a practical introduction to electron microscopy (SEM and TEM) and atomic force microscopy, based on the facilities available within the microscopy suite at Warwick. By the end of the course the students should have a working knowledge of imaging and chemical analysis on the SEM, an introduction to imaging and analysis on the TEM and AFM, and an understanding of the techniques. This is not a training course; rather it is intended to supplement and provide a formal background to the practical training which is routinely given.

Teaching will be divided into morning lectures (introducing the necessary theoretical background to the techniques) and three afternoon practical sessions running in parallel. Each practical session should have at most five people, limiting the course to fifteen people.

The course is primarily aimed at first year PhD students in Physics, Chemistry or Engineering.
