Philip Mousley

Background

I completed my MSci Natural Sciences degree (Physics with Chemistry) at the University of Bath in July 2013. In September 2013 I began my PhD project which is jointly funded by the University of Warwick and Diamond Light Source.

Research

My research is focussed on the surfaces of novel spin functional materials, which include half-metallic ferromagnets (e.g. MnSb) and topological insulators (e.g. SmB6). The aim of the project is to try to understand how the atomic structure of these materials change when they are layered onto standard semiconductor materials, and how these structural changes affects their transport properties. This is something which is crucial to understand in order for the materials to be utilised in future spintronic applications.

I use a variety of techniques to characterise samples including X-ray diffraction (XRD), Reflection high energy electron diffraction (RHEED), low energy electron diffraction (LEED), Atomic force microscopy (AFM) and Scanning electron microscopy (SEM).
