Ziyi (Eric) Hu

Experiences

I obtained my master's degree at Northeastern Petroleum University in China (2018). During my three-year study in the Center of Functional Composite led by Prof. Huaiyuan WangLink opens in a new window, I worked on the fabrication of superhydrophobic and superamphiphobic materials via cost-effective chemical approaches.

In 2019, I started my PhD study at Swansea University (supervisor: Prof. Christian KlinkeLink opens in a new window). After moved from Swansea to Warwick, I worked in the group supervised by Dr. Jeremy Sloan and Dr. James Lloyd-Hughes.

Research Areas

The project I used to work on was the fabrication of functional composite materials and characterization of their anti-corrosive property. My PhD project at Swansea University was to develop single-crystalline 2D metal chalcogenide nanomaterials (e.g., rock-salt PbS and SnS). My current research focus in Warwick is to study the atomic structures and transient spectroscopic performances of 1D nanowire-filled single-walled carbon nanotubes (NW-filled SWCNTs). The research assisted by time-resolved and temperature-dependent spectroscopic characterizations was recently published (selected as the Most Read Articles).

Structure of material

Nanostructure and dimensionalities of SWCNT-based material is studied by dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopic (STEM) imaging.

Spectroscopic characterizations on the SWCNT hybrids

Near-infrared fluorescence of small-diameter semiconducting SWCNTs (e.g., (6,4), (6,5)). Filling by zig-zag (nearly symmetric) and 2-by-1 (starkly asymmetric) atomic chains can both lead to an evolution of the emission spectra, but have distinguishable effects on different (n,m) SWCNTs.

The decay dynamics of SWCNTs are studied by femto-second transient absorption (fs-TA) spectroscopy. Relaxation of excitons at various transition states can be characterized, revealing the temporal effect of atomic chain filling on the photophysical performance of nanotubes.

Signatures of the free carriers in SWCNTs are characterized by infrared spectroscopy. Filling with atomic chains remarkably changes the conductivity of metallic-type nanotubes, as revealed by the quenching of plasmonic resonance peak.
