Prof. Paul Harrison

Research Interests

I founded the Warwick Elementary Particle Physics Group in 2004 and led it until the end of 2017, when I stood down to spend more time on my research. An introduction to particle physics for the lay person can be found at The Particle Adventure.

I am a member of the ATLAS experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider which, among other things, was one of the two experiments which discovered the Higgs Boson in 2012. My research interests also include the physics of neutrinos and quark flavour (fermion masses, mixings and neutrino oscillations). As part of my research into these areas, I have published a number of papers on quark and neutrino phenomenology.

Finally, I am interested in the application of the methods of physics outside the field, and I have done some research in both data encryption and psephology (the statistical study of elections).

For the academic year 2019-20, I am on sabbatical.

Undergraduate Teaching

I teach a fourth year course entitled Advanced Particle Physics (PX445).
I also teach some aspects of the second year Physics Skills Course (PX271). I have several third and fourth year project groups.

Postgraduate Teaching

I currently have two PhD students working on the ATLAS experiment.
