Research Fellow x 3

For informal enquiries, please contact Professor Danny Steeghs at D.T.Steeghs@warwick.ac.uk

The Department of Physics seeks to appoint several Prize Research Fellows in our third cycle of the Warwick Prize Fellowships to work within the Astronomy & Astrophysics Group at the University of Warwick. The initial appointment is for three years but may be extended by two additional years in case of exceptional performance.

Successful applicants will establish their own research program that overlaps with one of several of the research interests of the group. Key research areas at Warwick are exoplanets and disks, white dwarfs, compact binaries and accretion physics, extragalactic transients, gravitational wave astrophysics, and space domain awareness.

Funding for travel and IT equipment is available, as well as access to high performance computing.

You will have a successful track record in leading astrophysical research projects, be an enthusiastic communicator capable of working effectively both independently and as part of a research team and will have excellent interpersonal skills. You will possess good planning and time management skills to ensure your research goals are achieved effectively.

The Astronomy and Astrophysics group at Warwick is interested in observational and theoretical astrophysics, encompassing white dwarfs, high energy transient events, exoplanets, protoplanetary disks, and space domain awareness. The group makes extensive use of ground- and space-based telescopes, and we operate our own facilities in Chile, Australia and La Palma. We also regularly use high-performance computing infrastructure for our research.

We support our early career staff in developing their academic profile by proving the opportunity to supervise PhD and undergraduate research projects, and to take on other responsibilities that will contribute to positive career progression. The Astronomy & Astrophysics group runs regular Equitea meetings which is a monthly forum to discuss topics related to equity, diversity, and inclusion (ED&I) in relation to Astronomy, Physics and/or STEM as a whole. RESEARCH FELLOW (109112-0524)

The Department of Physics seeks to appoint a motivated and driven Research Fellow within the Astronomy and Astrophysics Group, to commence as soon as possible (start date negotiable), for a duration of 3 years. Applications for a part-time position will be considered.

The successful candidate will work with Dr Heather M. Cegla on the "Pathway to the Confirmation and Characterisation of Habitable Alien Worlds", funded by the UK Research and Innovation Future Leaders Fellowship programme.

They will utilise the state-of-the-art 3D magnetohydrodynamical simulations and perform spectral line synthesis to create realistic stellar surface simulations.

The aim is to further our understanding of Sun-like stars and improve the radial velocity detection and mass confirmation of low mass, long period planets. Duties will also include analysing and presenting results in peer-reviewed publications and at national and international conferences.

Applicants must hold or be about to attain a PhD in a related field. Applications should demonstrate a proven research track record. Strong written and oral communications skills will be essential for dissemination of results and outreach projects. Backgrounds in solar or stellar physics are preferred, especially in the areas of stellar modelling or line synthesis; areas outside these are encouraged if they complement the project. Experience with exoplanet science is desirable.

All qualified applicants are encouraged to apply, especially those from underrepresented groups; all applicants will receive equal consideration. To learn more about Warwick's commitment to and support of equity, diversity and inclusion please see the section 'Department of Physics' below and https://warwick.ac.uk/services/socialinclusion/.

For further information regarding the skills required for this role please see the personal specification section of the attached job description.

If you are near submission or have recently submitted your PhD but have not yet had it conferred, any offers of employment will be made as a Research Assistant at the top of level 5 of the university grade structure. Upon receipt of evidence of the successful award of your PhD, you will be promoted to Research Fellow on the first point of level 6 of the university grade structure.

For informal queries, please email Heather Cegla at h.cegla@warwick.ac.uk
