  • Our courses are one-year, full-time postgraduate courses. All courses will start on the 30th September 2019 and have a duration of 12 months.
  • Most courses we offer are structured so that you take 90 credits worth of modules (we have 10 and 15 credit modules), complete post module assignments for each module, and execute a major research project.* (see bottom of the page for courses with exceptions to this structure)
  • For most courses, the Project is worth 90 credit points (50% of the Master's credit) and you should work on it throughout the year, alongside your modules. The projects for CSE and HOM are 60 credit points, and the project for MBE contributes 100% of your Masters grade - see below for more information.
  • Modules are generally taught in intensive one-week blocks from Monday to Friday, 9.00am - 6.30pm. Some modules are delivered over two weeks, and occasionally, you may be required to attend weekend sessions. They are taught through a variety of learning activities: lectures, seminar work, syndicate group activities, industrial games, practical exercises and case studies to encourage teamwork and practical grounding of the material. E-learning and forum activities are widely used to complement these activities.
  • These week long sessions (up to nine in total over the course of the academic year) are scheduled at intervals from October through to June and attendance is compulsory. Modules are assessed by assignment, not exam, although for some modules there may be a test that will form part of the assessment.
  • There are additional study skills sessions to assist you with your assignments and project work. These lectures are not assessed, but are compulsory for you to attend. Please note that some of these additional sessions may run at weekends.

More information

The key information is contained within this menu. Open each section to find out more.

  • Course modules are specified for each of the MSc courses and these are the modules you must do and they are listed on the respective course pages.
    • In order to give you some flexibilty to tailor your course in line with your interests, most students will be able to select at least one elective module. Please see the course pages for specific details.
    • At the end of every module you will be given a post module assignment (PMA) based on the learning objective of the module.
    • This is a piece of assessed, written work which should take around 60 hours to complete (or 110 hours for 15 credit modules).
    • You will be required to submit your PMA four weeks after the end of the module
        • At the same time as the modules and assignments, you must undertake a major individual research project.
        • For most courses, your project is worth 50% of your overall Masters grade and must be submitted in the form of a dissertation of approximately 20,000 words during August. Once you have submitted your dissertation you will attend an oral exam where you will present it to your Project Supervisor and an independent supervisor. For MBE, your project is worth 100% of your grade - MBE modules use formative rather than summative assessment. For CSE and HOM your project is 60 credit points - 33% of your final grade.
        • Towards the start of the academic year we will provide you with a list of projects relevant to your chosen MSc. However, we can usually accommodate supervision on projects proposed by students specifically focused on thier individual career paths or aspirations.
        • You will have regular progress meetings with your project supervisor throughout the academic year.
        • We provide extensive support to strengthen your academic and research skills with regular workshops and seminars dedicated to academic writing, project planning, research skills and mind-mapping in addition to the research methodology module.
        • Work on your project runs alongside your module work and you are expected to devote an appropriate portion on your time and intellectual effort to the project throughout the year. This is nominally 900 hours of learning (600 hours of learning for CSE and HOM).

For the award of MSc you must:

          • Successfully attend and complete at least 90 credits worth of modules, which should include the specified core modules for the relevant degree. NB: CSE and HOM require you to complete 120 credits worth of modules.
          • Pass at least 70 credits worth of modules (including all essential core modules) with a mark of at least 50%; (NB: CSE and HOM require you to pass at least 100 credits worth of modules); a further 20 credits worth of failed modules may be accepted for the MSc, providing they achieve a mark of at least 40%.
          • Pass the 90 credit project with at least 50% (oral and dissertation elements must both be passed). NB: For CSE and HOM the project is 60 credits rather than 90.
          • An MSc with Merit is awarded if you pass all modules with a mark of at least 50%, the 90 (or 60) credit project with a mark of at least 60% and with an overall (weighted) average of 60% .
          • An MSc with Distinction is awarded if you pass all modules with a mark of at least 50%, the 90 (or 60) credit project with a mark of at least 65% and with an overall (weighted) average of 70%. NB: All marks for MSc Management for Business Excellence are gained from the project, therefore in order to graduate with distinction, the MBE project must be passed with a mark of at least 70%.

Cyber Security Engineering and Healthcare Operational Management have 8 x modules at 15 CAT points each (rather than 10) and the project is 60 CAT points (rather than 90).

The additional CAT points come from an additional assignments based on each module.

Management for Business Excellence course specific modules are generally delivered over a two-week session of 60 hours rather than a one-week session of 40 hours.
