Higher Education Minister at WMG

A WMG PRESS RELEASE

PR 05/09

8 April 2009

DAVID LAMMY: WMG WORK WILL “TRANSFORM HUMAN EXPERIENCE”

Higher Education Minister David Lammy visited WMG at the University of Warwick today to see for himself how the Group channels its research and education programmes into developing industrial practice.

Mr Lammy was hosted by WMG Director, Professor Lord Kumar Bhattacharyya, at the Group’s newest facility, the International Digital Lab.

His tour was a fact-finding mission following a visit by John Denham, Secretary of State for Innovation, Universities and Skills only a week ago.

He said: “I’m very excited to be visiting the Digital Lab. Cutting edge isn’t really the word, leading edge isn’t even enough, but this is work that’s clearly pre-eminent in the world. The research that’s done here is going to transform the way that human beings experience all sorts of things.

“But what’s especially important is that this work is being done with international business and small and medium sized companies right here in the Midlands. It is this kind of partnership that will keep Britain’s strong place in the world.”

Lord Bhattacharyya commented: “The Prime Minister said recently that we should not wait until this recession is over before we act, we must continue to do research and development and keep upskilling so we are in a great position when the upturn comes. This is what we’re doing here at WMG.”
