The Process

This is a useful method for assessing an alloy’s susceptibility to edge cracking, which is a phenomenon that is extremely difficult to predict when relying on traditional simulation approaches. Here at WMG, we have also started to develop an approach whereby experimental hole expansion data can be combined with a classical simulation approach to provide a more holistic assessment of a material’s formability.


The Benefits

The combination of the full suite of characterisation techniques employed at WMG allows us to quickly gather the information required for a materials assessment under simulation which can facilitate faster adoption of new and exciting alloys.
