internationalisation of higher education; migrant populations; international student mobility; intercultural competence; cultural adjustment and/or adaptation outcomes by fostering an interdisciplinary understanding of these topics, conceptually and methodologically (the latter of which via mixed methods approaches).
I was appointed Assistant Professor in Intercultural Communication at the Department of Applied Linguistics in 2022. Here, I co-teach across a range of modules on the Msc Intercultural Communication for Business and the Professions, including: Understanding Culture; Culture, Identity and Adaptation; Research Methods. In Term 2, I am module leader of Intercultural Competence and Assessment. My teaching and research adopt an interdisciplinary approach by integrating insights from sociology, social psychology, general and international education, evaluation, cross-cultural communication, second language acquisition and higher education studies. I have a 17-year teaching and research portfolio across education institutions in the USA, the UK, Portugal and Spain. Throughout my career I, have also worked on a range of research projects on intercultural communication and international education, from a variety of roles and funders (e.g., British Council, Interreg Europe, Erasmus+, Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology, Swedish International Development Agency, inter alia). During both my undergraduate and doctoral studies, I had the opportunity to study abroad. I was an Erasmus student at the University of Southampton and a visiting scholar at the School For International Training - SIT Graduate Institute (USA). My personal experience as an exchange student in the UK was the main motivation to carry out a doctoral research which aimed to enhance the intercultural learning of European exchange students during their stay abroad. I completed my PhD in Education at the University of Aveiro (Portugal) in 2015.
