My research interests include healthcare, qualitative research methods, English as a Lingua Franca, and sociolinguistics.
I am Research Fellow at the Department of Applied Linguistics conducting interdisciplinary, qualitative research in healthcare. The projects focus on risk negotiation and decision making in pre-hospital critical care (teamwork) in Emergency Medical Dispatch. Before joining the University of Warwick, I obtained my PhD in linguistics from Goldsmiths, University of London, where I was also Associate Lecturer in Sociolinguistics. For my doctoral research, I investigated lived experiences of patient communication between ethnic minorities from South and Southeast Asian backgrounds and local healthcare providers in Hong Kong from a (Medical) English as a Lingua Franca perspective, as well as communication and pragmatic strategies adopted in this context. Prior to my PhD, I was a lecturer teaching and supervising areas such as Applied Linguistics, public speaking, Public Relations and Advertising, and English (including speaking and phonology) in multiple universities in Hong Kong. I was also a research assistant in intercultural communication research while pursuing my MPhil in Applied English Linguistics in The Chinese University of Hong Kong.
