THE CORPUS OF BRITISH ACADEMIC WRITTEN ENGLISH (BAWE)
Contributing students will be given £3.00 (or £5.00 for certain subject areas and years of study) for each assignment accepted into the corpus, and will be required to sign a copyright disclaimer granting permission for the assignment to be used for the purposes outlined below.
What is the project about and what is a corpus?
The aim of the BAWE project is to investigate and analyse the wide range of different types of assessed writing produced by students in UK Higher Education settings. Examples of student writing which have been assessed as either merit or distinction level will be collected and then analysed by the research team.
A collection of texts, stored in electronic format, and used for linguistic analysis is called a corpus. The BAWE corpus will be a collection of a wide variety of proficient assessed writing produced at postgraduate and undergraduate level, drawn from all faculties within the University. The texts within the corpus will be categorised according to faculty, department, course module and year of study.
Data for the corpus will be collected at Reading University, Warwick University, Oxford Brookes University, and Coventry University.
What are we looking for?
We are looking for students to supply us with the electronic files of their assignments and to fill in and sign a submission form which assigns copyright to us so that we can store and analyse an anonymised copy of your work. In return for your cooperation, we will pay three pounds for each assignment that you donate. The assignments must have been written by you and have been awarded a mark equivalent to merit or distinction (60% or II.i and above)
What will happen to the texts?
Each text will be made anonymous before being included in the corpus. The full corpus (containing over 3000 examples of student work) will eventually be made accessible to researchers via the Oxford Text Archive and the ESRC Archive. Other interested parties such as writing tutors and students may be granted limited access to parts of the corpus, for example via an online concordancer.
The primary purpose of the corpus will be to enable the research team to identify the characteristics of student writing, and compare the writing produced in different disciplines and at different levels of study. Corpus samples may also eventually be used in teaching materials.
