THE CEREBRA 1000 FAMILIES STUDIES: FAMILIES OF CHILDREN WITH INTELLECTUAL AND DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES

Professor Richard Hastings and Dr Vaso Totsika

Cerebra have awarded CEDAR a research grant over six years from 2014 to fund research on the well-being of families of children with intellectual disability (ID) and/or autism. This funding establishes Richard Hastings as the Cerebra Chair of Family Research. A core project will be a large scale survey study of multiple family members (child with ID/autism, mothers, fathers, siblings, and potentially extended family members). The Cerebra 1,000 Families study will begin in 2015 with the recruitment of children with ID/autism from 5-11 years and their families. During the funding period, a two year longitudinal follow-up of this sample will also be carried out. The Cerebra funding has been used as matched funding to support two ESRC Collaborative PhD studentships from October 2014. We expect one of these PhD students to focus on parental positive adaptation, and the second on family systems questions.
