Two final year students to present their papers at the Carroll Round, Georgetown University in Washington

Two Research in Applied Economics (RAE) students have been invited to participate in the 17^th Annual Carroll Round, the undergraduate international economics conference to be held at Georgetown University, from April 19 to April 22, 2018.

Congratulations to Tristan Byrne and Stephan Hobler who will be heading to Washington in April, to present their RAE paper at the conference. The department is extremely pleased to support the participation of our students to such a high profile event.

Tristan is conducting a quantitative analysis on ‘Gentrification and displacement’ with a focus on London and Stephan will present his paper on ‘Disappearing Jobs and Displaced Workers: Does Education Matter?’ using U.S. data.

Through the years, RAE students have been remarkably successful in having their submitted papers accepted for presentation at Georgetown University’s prestigious Carroll Round (26 acceptances since 2007), an annual conference which attracts students from top undergraduate programmes, including the universities of Chicago, Columbia, Duke, Harvard, MIT, LSE, Oxford, Pennsylvania, Princeton, Stanford, and Yale. Acceptance at the conference demonstrates the quality of work shown by RAE students, and contributes to raise the international profile of Warwick’s programmes.

Tristan commented on his dissertation paper and being selected to participate in this year's Carroll Round:

"Growing up in London, I was always inspired by the fact that neighbourhoods often had a broad mix of rich and poor, white and non-white living side-by-side. However gentrification and the broader housing crisis means low income households can no longer afford to live in many neighbourhoods. In my paper I attempt to estimate the effect gentrification has on the rate on outwards residential mobility for different demographic groups in London."

"I feel incredibly privileged to be presenting my dissertation to prominent members of the academic community at the Carroll Round conference. I am grateful to all my professors, especially Ali Moghaddasi Kelishomi and Gianna Boero for their encouragement and support in the RAE module.

Stephan also commented on his selection:

"I am absolutely delighted at the opportunity to participate at this year’s Carroll Round. It is a uniquely fascinating platform to engage in economic discussion at the highest level and be able to actively contribute to some of the most pressing issues in economics today. To do this representing Warwick fills me with great pride."
