£2m funding award recognises the Centre for Competitive Advantage in the Global Economy as a UK centre of research excellence
Wednesday 19 Sep 2018The Centre for Competitive Advantage in the Global Economy (CAGE), based in the Department of Economics at the University of Warwick, has been awarded £2.09 million to continue its pioneering social science research for another five years.
CAGE is one of just nine UK centres of excellence to receive funding from the ESRC. The Centre is also supported financially by the University of Warwick.
Research at CAGE examines how and why different countries achieve economic success. CAGE members explore how countries succeed in achieving policy objectives central to the economic wellbeing of their citizens, such as improving living standards, raising productivity, and maintaining international competitiveness.
A distinctive aspect of the Centre’s work is its commitment to economic history as well as economic theory, and the use of historical perspective to illuminate current policy debates.
This new funding recognises the success of CAGE and the importance of its work, and will support its research programme for a further 5 years from January 2020.
Professor Nicholas Crafts, the Director of CAGE, said:
The focal point of CAGE will continue to be understanding how countries succeed in the global economy. We will sustain and develop our research into long-run growth performance, the determinants of well-being and escape from poverty, institutional reform and the political economy of managing change in a globalising world.”

"The breadth of social science that these centres of excellence encompass illustrates the strength of UK social science. This funding will support these centres and help set them on a path to long term sustainability.
