Job creation by organisation type - Cooperatives in selected European countries

Eurofound commissioned Warwick IER with FGB to undertake research into the employment effects of cooperatives. This follows from evidence that cooperatives were more effective, then other organisations, at maintaining and creating jobs through and beyond the 2008 financial crisis. The aims of the research project were to:
- investigate the contribution of European cooperatives to job creation and retention, including the type (full-time/part-time) and quality of jobs;
- identify drivers and challenges related to employment and job growth in European cooperatives;
- explore the employment conditions for jobs retained or created;
- study working conditions and industrial relations within European cooperatives;
- examine transitions for workers within and beyond cooperatives; and
- illustrate the incidence of public or social partner-based support for job creation in cooperatives in selected EU countries.
The project initially identified and reviewed available data and literature at European and national level, and highlighted gaps in available information and data.
The study also explored the experiences of cooperatives through case studies in five EU countries.
