Early Career Researchers

This programme is designed for social scientists in their early careers whose research interests are closely allied with those of the Warwick Institute for Employment Research (IER). At first, the programme was primarily open to young researchers from institutions with which the IER has collaborative links, and one of its purposes was to promote contact amongst the younger researchers across those institutions. However, the programme is now open to any suitable applicant, regardless of their current institutional affiliation.

The Early Stage Researcher Programme (ESRP) enables selected early career academics to spend a period of time based at the IER, receiving supervision from a senior researcher and other support. Applicants are considered for the programme on the basis of a summary of the work they propose to carry out whilst at the IER, together with written recommendations from two senior academics within their home institution, one of whom should have a close knowledge of their work. These recommendations should be made via email to: ierphd at warwick dot ac dot uk.

Those early stage researchers who are part way through their PhD programme within their home institution will be designated as Visiting PhD Students. Those who have completed and been awarded their PhD will be appointed as Post-doctoral Visiting Fellows.

It is expected that the visiting researcher will become involved and participate as fully as possible in the life and work of the IER. This will include participation in seminars and workshops, as well as more informal interchange of ideas with IER colleagues.

A regular supervision period with a designated senior member of the Institute’s research staff would be built into the programme. Other support offered includes access to all the general facilities of the University, notably IT and the main University Library; within the IER, access to its specialist collection of publications and to the wide range of data held here, shared office space and general office facilities such as telephone, fax, photocopying etc.

The fee payable via the Institute’s administration is pro rata to the annual fee for postgraduate research. Further details can be provided upon request. The fee excludes any allowance for accommodation, conference attendance, subsistence or travel.
