Tony Elger

Profile

Tony Elger is an Emeritus Professor in the Sociology Department at the University of Warwick, and a member of the CREW (Connecting Research on Employment and Work) network. He now lives in Scotland but retains links with the Department, having been a staff member from 1973 to 2009.

His teaching and research interests throughout his career have focused on political economy, the sociology of work and employment, and associated theoretical and methodological debates.

In retirement he retains a particular interest in the implications of the reorganisation of work and employment relations for workers and trade unions, and in the interplay between globalising corporations, national state policies and local and broader labour and social movements. Other interests include the analytical and political implications of changing ways of conceptualising work, employment and economic life; the implications of critical realism for social research, especially in relation to case-studies; and the sociology of scientific knowledge, especially in relation to the earth sciences.
