Lack of support for printer sharing

Windows theoretically provides the ability to share a local printer between more than one machine. This is not supported by WBS eSolutions for the following reasons:

  • Support costs associated with this have proved very high
  • School network printers have print release so you can print to any device
  • The technology is not sufficiently stable, being designed for a home environment
  • The setup requires the hosting computer to be on and causes a slow down in performance each time a job is printed.

If a printer needs to be shared between a number of users then it should be purchased with the necessary technology included. Staff wishing to purchase a printer should contact Dene Statham (dene.statham@wbs.ac.uk) for advice.
