The Dynamics of Networked Innovation: Barriers to Knowledge Transfer

Successful innovation depends on the ability to bring together, integrate and exploit knowledge from a diverse range of sources. However, this involves overcoming the boundaries that prevent the translation of knowledge from one group to another. This study will investigate the sources and effects of these boundaries and their impact on innovation, through a comparative study of US and UK sites. The comparative element of the study will help to inform policy-making in this area.
The focus of the study will be on the process of commercializing scientific and technological inventions and the associated knowledge boundaries between scientists/technologists, business development staff, venture capitalists, and lawyers.
This study is jointly funded by the Cambridge-MIT Institute and the UK's ESRC (Economic and Social Research Council).
The Project commenced in October 2004 and completed in October 2006.
