Applied Theatre in Health and Social Care

Monday 21st April, 10:00-16:00, CAPITAL Centre Studio

Applied Theatre Consultants Ltd. are a New Zealand based company dedicated to addressing social and public issues through theatre. Working with the government, their recent programs have tackled issues such as sexual abuse, family violence, youth suicide, and stigmas surrounding mental health.

Dr. Peter O'Connor, co-director of the company, will be visiting CAPITAL on Monday 21st April (week one) to present a workshop based on the work done by the company. The day will include a free lunch.

The workshop is based on a training programme called "Headspin" that Peter co-wrote for the Mental Health Foundation of New Zealand as part of its national campaign to counter the stigma and discrimination associated with mental illness.

It uses the recorded music of a young man with bi-polar disorder and process drama strategies to help participants reflect on their attitudes and behaviours towards mental illness. The workshop is used in psychiatric and mental health facilities, in schools, and with community groups.

This is an opportunity to learn about the ways in which theatre skills and creativity are used to further education and social awareness, and also to meet and talk to a leading practitioner of applied theatre.

If you are interested in taking part, please e-mail Peter.Kirwan@warwick.ac.uk with your department and details.

There are a limited number of places on this workshop, so please book early to avoid disappointment.
