Introduction to VAT

Monday 21 April, 2pm - 4.30pm, CMR1.2, University House

This Finance Office Skills Session introduces staff to the basics of VAT, and its operation and implications within the University. It is aimed at staff dealing with day to day VAT matters, preparing purchase or sales orders or processing invoices. It will be presented by Alice Helps (Tax team) and Saykin Su (SAP team).

Topics covered will include:

  • Explanation of VAT terms
  • Common aspects of VAT:
    • VAT rates
    • Liability of income and expenditure
    • entitlement to reclaim VAT
  • Types of supply - goods and services
  • Tax points
  • Special treatments for charities
  • Overseas trade and foreign VAT
