Public Meeting: 'State Oppression in India - Free Binayak Sen'

Saturday 7 March, 3pm - 6pm, S0.21, Social Studies

This public meeting calls for the release of Dr Binayak Sen. It is chaired by Professor Shirin Rai (Warwick), and will feature speakers:

  • Professor Ilana Sen - feminist scholar, human rights activist and wife of Dr Binayak Sen
  • Ms Kavita Srivastava - PUCL, India
  • Professor Upendra Baxi - Warwick

This event is organised by the Warwick South Asia Group.

Dr Binayak Sen has spent three decades serving poor communities in Chhattisgarh state in central India and won the 2008 Jonathan Mann Award from the Global Health Council.

He was arrested in May 2007 on what Amnesty International has called "trumped up charges". His only crime was to expos government atrocities against the poor of that state. His arrest has been condemned worldwide by renowned doctors and several Nobel laureates and human rights groups including Amnesty International.
