Abstract
Our work has concentrated on the role that reactive oxygen species (ROS) and modified redox signalling play in age-related loss of muscle mass and function. Data indicate that ageing is associated with loss of protective adaptive responses to contractile activity that are normally initiated through transient, contraction-induced increases in ROS generation. Circumvention of these attenuated adaptations in transgenic models leads to a preservation of muscle mass and function during ageing. Current MRC-funded studies are addressing the relevance of this model to sarcopenia in older individuals through novel analyses of mitochondrial ROS generation in muscle biopsy samples and through the identification of potential dietary interventions to modify age-related changes in redox signalling.
