Abstract

It is common now to think of adipose tissue as an endocrine organ, and to down-play its metabolic role. I will review studies of the pathways and regulation of fat mobilization and fat deposition in human adipose tissue in vivo, and hope to show that these are highly active and regulated on a minute-to-minute basis so as to deliver appropriate fuels to other tissues. I will look at disturbances in adipose tissue function in obesity, and argue that the role of adipose tissue in the co-morbidities of obesity can be understood in metabolic terms. Finally I will discuss recent studies of different human adipose depots, their relationships to metabolic health, and their physiology in vivo.
