Behind the scenes with Geraldine Reidy

Hear from colleagues who are taking time to contribute to graduation week, find out about their role and what they enjoy about it. It's a chance to see some of the activity that goes on behind the scenes to help make graduation week a success.

Behind the scenes with...

Geraldine Reidy
Graphic Designer, Warwick Print
Role at graduation: Calligrapher

My usual job involves…
creative design for print of leaflets, exhibition stands, promotional material for University departments and external clients on and off campus.

In advance of graduation week…
liaise with the Graduation team to confirm dates and names etc. and then find a quiet time in the office to complete the Calligraphy for the honorary graduate book. I have to make sure there are no interruptions whilst I’m writing as there is no way of correcting mistakes!

I also work with the University Marketing team, preparing signage and exhibition stands for the event, including preparing artwork for the signage on the Arts Centre window and banners stands and displays in and around the campus.

During graduation week I…
am usually working on last minute print requirements for Graduation, which include design and print of the Graduation Dinner Menus – most of which can’t be prepared in advance, because the chefs and musicians haven’t confirmed food and music choices!

I really enjoy…
working closely with the different teams involved and ‘buzz’ which surrounds the event.

Not everyone knows that…
the actual honorary Degree Congregation book was handmade on site by Warwick Print’s skilled bookbinder using a process that hasn’t changed in over a hundred years.

What would you say to colleagues considering getting involved?
I would say to my colleagues lucky enough to have the opportunity to be involved in this prestigious event to go for it! It is the pinnacle of the students' time here at Warwick and is a very special day, it has been an honour to be part of it!

What invaluable tip or advice would you give?
Enjoy your day, it’s a milestone for you and your family!
