The Boar voted student publication of the year

The University of Warwick students’ newspaper, the Boar, has been voted Student Publication of the Year 2013 by Ones to Watch.

boarAfter being voted Student Publication of the Month in February 2013, the paper made the long list of publications up for the accolade.

The top publications were then voted on in a public vote, in which the Boar received more votes than any other publication and made it onto a shortlist which included The University of Sheffield’s Forge Press paper and the University of Southampton’s paper Wessex Scene.

Judges from Ones to Watch, which is run by the Guardian newspaper’s student section, then chose the eventual winner based on all the content produced over the year.

Judge Lucy Sherriff, of Huffington Post Students, said:

The Boar stood out as a winner for the amount of thought and effort put into producing exclusive content – including FOIs – as well as breaking news. Its content is intuitive and is really tailored towards a student audience.”

Other judges commented:

The articles on The Boar as always varied – lots of variety when it comes to tone, topic, features and comment. I feel that the articles they write aren’t just generic pieces and take a unique view. They have particularly interesting and in-depth features and comment pieces and usually cover rather original and thoughtful topics, avoiding clichés.”

George Ryan, the Editor at the Boar, said of the award:

We are delighted to have been selected as Student Publication of the Year. It just goes to show that all the hard work that is put in by students really does pay off. We also received the highest number of public votes, which shows how much the paper means to a large number of people. This is a fantastic way to start our 40th anniversary celebrations, and we hope is the first of many successes of the forthcoming year.”
