IT Services and the Estates Office have introduced a new energy-saving project to all computers in the student work areas around campus following a successful pilot in the Library which saw significant overnight energy savings.

The system becomes active at off-peak times (evenings and weekends), checking each machine every 15 minutes to see if it has been used at all in that time. If it hasn't the system automatically powers down the machine, cutting out any unnecessary energy use.

Using data on the average amount of energy consumed by a computer, we've estimated the cut in carbon emissions that the project will generate to be around 32 tonnes of CO₂ per year. That's about as much as seven average UK households would emit in that time.

We hope to make further reductions to energy use by also having special settings for the machines outside of term time.
