The ESRC Festival of Social Science will be taking place across the UK from 1-8 November 2014 its aim is to offer insight into some of the UK’s leading Social Science research and how it influences our social, economic and political lives and includes some Warwick events:

1 Nov, 10am-4pm: Open Innovation: Sharing Social Science around Coventry
The Herbert Art Gallery and Museum
This one-off poster exhibition brings the research of local doctoral students to life for a general audience. It makes the innovative research that is going on around Warwick and Coventry accessible and relevant to the general public and will be an opportunity to find out more about the role that social science research plays in improving society, building links between researchers and members of the community.

4 Nov, 12pm-2pm: Happiness around the World
Arts Centre Studio, Warwick Arts Centre
Professor Andrew Oswald will give a lecture on the theme of happiness around the world and will talk to the audience about the scientific evidence.
The subject of happiness and happiness economics is relevant to a wide audience and features regularly in the media. This event will give the audience an insight into happiness economics and how the subject relates to everyday life.

6 Nov, 4pm-6pm: Economics in the Real World
Panorama Suite, Rootes Building
This event is for sixth form students who are studying or who are interested in studying economics. We will showcase research produced at the Centre for Competitive Advantage in the Global Economy which shows the breadth and depth of the subject and how the research is relevant to real world issues: e.g.: the importance of economics history in drawing lessons from the past; UK unemployment in the financial crisis; how randomised experiments in developing countries help policymakers develop the right policies to foster economic development.

13 Nov, 12pm-2.30: University of Warwick Global Social Mobility Debate
The British Library, 96 Euston Road, London
In the UK, university access rates for students from ethnic minorities and socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds remain a clear challenge for our higher education (HE) system. The University of Warwick and our Warwick Commission on the Future of Cultural Value, in partnership with the British Library and supported by RSA Academies, Cheltenham Festivals and the ESRC are holding a major debate on UK universities, access and the global social mobility challenge. Speakers will include:

- ESRC Chief Executive Jane Elliot (Introduction)
- Baroness Valerie Amos, UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Co-ordinator (Keynote Speaker)

14 Nov, 10am-5pm (change of date): Engagement with the Local Community through Online Writing
The Herbert Museum and Art Gallery
A workshop for community leaders and practitioners who have been involved in some way with the Sociology Department’s research. Delegates will be invited to write blog articles about their experiences of being involved, what they took from that involvement, or aspects of the research findings that they were/are interested in.
