The Heron Scholarship in Science & Arts was sponsored by Jonathan (Jonny) Heron from the Institute for Advanced Teaching & Learning at the University of Warwick. To win a year's free IGGY membership, applicants needed to identify an aspect of physics or biology that they feel could be taught through the performing arts. Applications were opened in early August, and we were delighted to receive some very impressive entries.

After careful consideration from Jonny, the Heron Scholarship in Science & Arts was awarded to Aaiz Khan, a 17 year old student from Pakistan. Aaiz combined two of his passions, biology and music, and devised a way of teaching and learning genetics through basic guitar string theory. Aaiz's project was playfully titled 'Genes on a String'.

Aaiz said:

I always wanted to be a part of IGGY and represent my country, Pakistan, and its talented youth on an international level. This is no less than a dream come true. Thank you very much IGGY, thank you very much University of Warwick and thank you very much Jonny Heron. This is truly an honour for me and my country."

IGGY is a social and educational network created by the University of Warwick to help gifted young people aged 13-18 realise their full potential. It gives members access to great educational resources and encourages them to work with top academics, student mentors and other gifted young people around the world to exchange ideas, debate, learn and explore in a safe environment.
