End of support for Windows XP and Novell: Technical info

Key Dates

Monday 1 July: From this date, any requests relating to applications delivered via the Novell application launcher (or "Warwick Tree") will be considered on a case by case basis.

Friday 16 August: ITS will switch off the old file store system that managed XP desktops use, making files and folders inaccessible. ITS will also switch off the old iPrint system, so printing from this service will no longer be possible. The Novell application launcher will also be switched off.

ITS will also switch off the system that allows you to log in to a managed XP desktop – the Novell authentication system.

The replacement system

By August, ITS expect to have finished their work to move all of their managed XP desktops over to Windows 7. Anyone using the new managed Windows 7 desktop won't be affected by this work. ITS will make, where possible, all existing iPrint queues available for installation within the new Managed Printing service.

If you're not using the ITS Managed desktop, existing Novell storage will be migrated and available in the Windows storage system. You'll need to connect to your department's printers, which will be available through individual departmental printer deployment pages.

We'll post more information over the coming months.
