Lesbian, gay and bisexual student support group

Who is it for?

You, whether you’re lesbian, gay, bisexual or unsure about your sexuality; whether you’ve been out for years or have only recently been thinking about your sexuality. Being lesbian, gay, bisexual, or just not sure of your sexuality, can be difficult in the context of a world that sees heterosexuality as the norm, and this is an opportunity for you to think about what it means to be LGB or talk with others about how you feel about this.

What is it?

A weekly support group of between 6-12 students who are lesbian, gay, bisexual or unsure about their sexuality.

When is it?

We meet from 5.15pm - 7.15pm beginning on Thursday 27 February 2014. Other dates are 6 March, 13 March, 24 April and 8 May.

What happens after you register?

You'll be invited to a short meeting with either Hanya or Monique, who run the group, to find out more about it before deciding if it is something that you want to do. Please register soon so that we have time to meet with you.

If you do join the group, we ask that you attend all five sessions so that you and others get the most out of the group.

What happens in the group?

To begin with, you will get to know a bit about one another. Then each week we have some time to check-in and talk about anything that's important to you, as well as some time to do an activity together. You'll sometimes work on your own, other times with one ot two other people, and as a whole group. Things we talk about include:

  • your 'coming out' journey
  • your circle of relationships and how you'd like that to develop
  • how stereotypes of gay people can make it hard for you to develop your own identity

And you can add suggestions to what we'll discuss in the five sessions we'll have together.

Why have a group?

Being lesbian, gay, bisexual, or just not sure of your sexuality, can be difficult in a world where heterosexuality is seen as the norm, and being at university can present some unique challenges for LGB student.

Whether you've been out for years or have only recently begun thinking about your sexual identity, this group provides a safe, supportive and confidential setting for you to talk with other LGB students about issues that affect you.
