Long Service Awards profile: Ian Griffiths

Name: Ian Griffith

Job title: Senior Electronics Technician

Department: School of Engineering

Number of years at Warwick: 30

There’s no such thing as a typical day, but, in brief, my job involves...

Provision of leading electronics support for the teaching and research activities of the school. This would include the management of our undergraduate teaching labs, design and manufacture of electronic experiments for teaching and research. Support for all student projects covering the various disciplines within the school and the repair and maintenance of electronic equipment. I started as a trainee at 18 and have stayed with the school from the start and developed my career.

My most memorable moment at Warwick has been...

Well, there have been a few over the years but one stands out from last summer. I was responsible for delivering a new electronics teaching laboratory for our 1st and 2nd years with a capacity for 100 students. An old and tired lab with poor equipment was transformed into a state of the art electronics facility using SmartLab, which is now the largest implementation of the technology globally. It was a massive undertaking but we now have a superb facility and I am extremely proud to have been the key architect of its success.

In my time at Warwick, the biggest change I’ve seen is...

Almost impossible to answer because literally Warwick is all about change and adapting to the ever changing world we live in, but probably the actual campus. There has not been a single year without some kind of building work!

Warwick’s kept me here because...

I’ve been very fortunate to work with some really nice and knowledgeable people, who have taught me so much over the years and have loved working with my colleagues. The most important thing though, is that the job is so varied and the projects I’ve worked on are so diverse and rewarding. Also, my role has changed from being taught, to now teaching myself and I love the interaction with the students, especially the PhD students.

At the moment I’m really enjoying working on...

Developing new experiments to take advantage of our state of the art electronics lab and also creating a new electronics lab for our 3rd and 4th years.

It would be really useful to work more closely with...

Being in the field of electronics, an ever changing discipline, it’s very important to maintain and make new contacts in industry, to that end I’m always looking for opportunities. Having two new apprentices, I have secured future placements to give them a taste of the real world.

Warwick’s unique because...

We have a great campus, a great student body and a great reputation both locally and globally.

The best thing about working at Warwick is...

For me it’s working with students on a one to one basis, sharing my experience and seeing them develop personally and educationally.

If I could change one thing at the University, it would be...

Provide dedicated parking for staff!

I usually travel to campus by...

Car. Coming from Rugby, recently the drive has got longer and longer due to roadworks on the A45 but hopefully that will be completed soon. Car parking is a major issue (or lack of should I say) which I worry will only get worse as the new buildings come on line.

I have made use of...

Warwick Print for some personal posters, to promote my wife’s first CD ‘Imagens’ by the ‘Williams Kelleher Duo’ which is a superb classical guitar album, apologies for shameless plug!

I used my Warwick Learning Account vouchers for...

I haven’t used it as much as I should have done but really enjoyed some squash lessons I had.

I recently watched...

I have seen numerous performances at the Arts Centre over the years and like to take in 3 or 4 each year.
