ITS support for Windows XP and Novell to end - final update

IT Services (ITS) will commence withdrawal of all Novell services from Friday 16 August 2013. From this date, ITS will no longer run and support their managed Windows XP desktops.

All H drives and central printing will have been moved to new Microsoft servers and facilities made available to access them through alternative means.

What does this mean?

If you see the following screen when logging in, then you are currently using Novell services and you will not be able to log into your desktop after Friday 16 August.

From Friday 16 August 2013 at 5pm

If you see the above message when logging in, you will not be able to log in.

If you do not use a Windows 7 machine, you will need to access your H Drive files by using the MyFiles service or by mapping a drive.

Printing

If you are using a Windows computer, and you see this icon printer, you will no longer be able to print after Friday 16 August.

You will need to switch over to the replacement service by following the instructions on the departmental printer deployment pages.

If you are using Windows XP, you will not be able to print directly to our print queues. Until your computer can be upgraded to Windows 7 (or above), you will need to speak to your IT Departmental contact to see if a local printer is available to be installed. Alternatively, you may be able to use the Mobile Print Service if your department uses the ‘pull print’ process (whereby you scan your University ID card to collect printouts).

If you are using an Apple Mac, please follow the instructions on the departmental printer deployment pages.

If you are a Linux user, you will need to configure your computer to connect directly to the print queue utilising the SMB protocol.

You can find printer make and model, queue and server information by selecting your Department on the departmental printer deployment pages and will need to download and install the correct print driver from the appropriate manufacturer’s website.

For more information please speak to your IT contact or alternatively contact the IT Help Desk.
