National Student Survey 2013: your opinion matters
There's still time to have your say about Warwick in the National Student Survey (NSS) 2013.
NSS plays an important role in helping future students decide where to study and in ensuring that universities are achieving the high standards they set for themselves.
Open to final year undergraduate students, the survey takes just a few minutes to complete online. More than half of our students have already given their views, with a more than 90% response rate from students in Italian and 80% from Chemistry. Thanks to everyone who's taken part.
Don't miss out on the chance to give your views - complete your survey today at www.thestudentsurvey.com
The Students' Union and the University jointly support the National Student Survey and take the results seriously. To say thank you for taking part, the University is offering a free prize draw with a first prize of £200. There are two second prizes of a graduation photography and robe hire package, a third prize of £100 and five additional runner up prizes of £20 vouchers for the Bookshop.

Responding to student feedback
In the 2012 NSS, Warwick had an overall response rate of 73% and we continued to achieve a very high level of overall satisfaction (87%) as part of NSS 2012, and well above the sector average for the quality of teaching, the support and resources available to our students, and the opportunities open to all for personal development. These results, along with other student feedback, have had an impact on teaching, learning and student support at Warwick including:
On teaching and learning:
- We set up the Institute of Advanced Teaching and Learning (IATL), to support our commitment to innovative teaching and a distinctive student experience.
- Annual institution-wide and Faculty-based (Arts, Science, Social Science) Teaching and Learning showcases, provide colleagues with a forum for discussion, an opportunity to share practice and ideas, and a chance to meet new members of the Faculty.
- We introduced the Warwick Awards for Teaching Excellence (WATE) and WATE for Postgraduate Research students (WATEPGR) to ensure that excellence in teaching and learning is rewarded and recognised.
On feedback and assessment:
- We introduced the online Student Assignment Management System (SAMS) in April 2012. The system is now in use in most academic departments.
- In October 2012, as part of the launch of the Warwick Student Community Statement (WSCS), we reaffirmed our commitment to provide feedback to all students on assessed work within 4 weeks of submission.
- To help highlight and spread examples of good practice, the University and the Students’ Union jointly announced the Fabulous Feedback initiative.
On academic support:
- In December 2012, the Senior Tutor's office released updated guidelines for personal tutors to reflect changes arising from an ongoing review of personal tutoring, including a survey of student and staff opinion, as well as consultations during the institution-wide Teaching and Learning Review.
On organisation and management:
- In May 2010, we published good practice guidelines to improve support and liaison arrangements for students on joint honours degrees. The Good Practice Guide was updated in July 2012, to ensure the guidance continues to reflect best practice.
On learning resources:
- The library now operates extended opening hours, including 24-hour opening throughout the Summer term.
- The library has also undergone extensive refurbishment work, initially a £3.5 million investment in 2007, followed by a programme of work culminating in the remodelling of the entrance area and Floor 4 in Summer 2012.
- We opened The Learning Grid Leamington in November 2012, providing study space without students having to travel to campus. A further large study space - the Learning Grid Rootes - in the Rootes building on main campus will open early in the summer term 2013.
- We're investing heavily in our teaching accommodation, to ensure that it remains fit for purpose. Most recently, the refurbishment of the Ramphal Building was completed in September 2012.
On personal development:
- In February 2012, we opened a new Placement Learning Unit focusing on helping students to recognise the contribution work experience makes to their employability, and providing bursaries to support them in accessing appropriate opportunities.
On transport:
- We've invested in improved bus services to make it easier and more convenient for students to get to and from campus. This has included frequent services from Coventry City centre via the Railway Station to main campus (operating 6am - midnight), and extra bus services stopping at the Hearsall Common bus stops, which was a major problem for students in the morning peak.
- From October 2012, Travel Coventry increased both frequency and capacity of the No 12 bus service from Coventry to main campus addressing much of the overcrowding and frequency issues students told us about.
- Stagecoach has added extra modern buses with wi-fi to the morning and evening peak periods, which has significantly improved the bus service for students travelling from Leamington Spa.
- A new daytime campus shuttle bus service became operational from January 2013.
- 2012 saw work completed on a new cycle route from Kenilworth, leading straight to campus.
On campus:
- We've opened several new buildings in the past 3 years, including the Bluebell Halls of Residence and the Sherbourne Halls of Residence.
- Infrastructure to support wireless networking in all student residences is being installed in 2012/13 at a cost of £2 million.
- We're investing £1.5 million in refurbishing the sports centre, with the first phase including opening a new gym to be completed in February 2013.
- Car parks on campus have been refurbished to ensure that they are more energy efficient, through the installation of new lights and sensors.
