Nursery children receive the full graduation treatment

On 27 June, 45 children from the University Nursery took part in a mini graduation ceremony in the Grad Deck, receiving their certificates from Vice-Chancellor Professor Nigel Thrift. The graduations were attended by proud parents and nursery staff, and were followed by the traditional celebratory party.

The children will all be leaving the nursery this summer, many to start school, and several moving overseas. Each child was presented with a leavers certificate and learning journal, to remember their time at the nursery.

Nursery Manager, Debbie Castle said:

The Vice Chancellor, who is used to presenting certificates to graduates, did a sterling job in keeping proceedings moving along, although he's probably never had to cope with recipients bursting into tears and refusing to accept their certificates before! All our nursery staff and families enjoyed the occasion, but it is always a time tainted with sadness as we say goodbye to the children we have been caring for, many for the last four years. We wish them all every happiness."

Professor Nigel Thrift added:

It was an absolute delight to be a part of this very special day for the children, their parents and the nursery staff. As with any graduation, this marks the start of a new chapter in their lives and I wish the children every success for the future."

Professor Sascha Becker, parent of four-year-old Elias, attended the event. He said:

The graduation ceremony for children leaving nursery was very special. We were impressed the VC took the time to personally present the certificates. Elias was very much looking forward to his graduation day, counting every night how many sleeps were still left. When the big day arrived, he couldn’t wait to get to nursery to receive his diploma. But most of all he enjoyed the party afterwards with bouncy castle and magician! It was a great event for everyone.”
