SPRINT success: FAPESP-Warwick Joint Fund 2015-16

Five Warwick academics have been awarded research grants through the recent SPRINT 2015 call for proposals to the joint Warwick-FAPESP fund. SPRINT (São Paulo Researchers in International Collaboration) is a strategy designed to encourage and promote the advancement of international research by funding researchers affiliated with institutions in the State of São Paulo, Brazil, and their academic partners abroad.

Dr Rohit Bhagat (WMG), Dr Katherine Denby (Life Sciences), Dr Ross Forman (English), Dr Jo Garde-Hansen (Cultural Policy Studies), and Dr John Walsh (Life Sciences) have each been awarded funding to further develop existing research collaborations with colleagues at a variety of institutions across the state, including the University of São Paulo (USP) and São Paulo State University (UNESP).

Professor Tim Jones, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Science, Engineering & Medicine) commented:

This is an excellent outcome for our Warwick researchers and their academic partners in Brazil. This joint fund is designed to support international research collaborations between Warwick and São Paulo state I look forward to seeing how these collaborations continue to grow and develop. The fund is testament to Warwick’s commitment to developing research partnerships with one of the most influential regions in Latin America and is yet another success for Warwick’s growing activity in Brazil."

Warwick signed a cooperation agreement with FAPESP, the state funding agency for São Paulo, in 2014, with the express intention of joint funding researchers from the University of Warwick and from the State of São Paulo, Brazil. São Paulo state has a population of forty million and generates 35% of Brazil’s GNP. The state is responsible for 52% of the country’s scientific articles published in international journals.

Featured project

"The Narratives of Water (NoW) project with Dr Danilo Rothberg, University of São Paulo, Brazil, is an opportunity to work trans-nationally and trans-culturally on drought and flood resilience. The expected outcomes will build upon current projects in the UK and Brazil that focus on stories, narratives and memories of water that inform the concept and practice of digital hydro-citizenship. We expect to connect expertise to address environmental issues related to water management and sustainability in a comparative perspective."
