Statute 24 reform: Update April 2017

A message from Provost Christine Ennew updating on reform of Statute 24 and its related Ordinances

11 April 2017

Dear colleagues

Further to my communication on 28 March regarding the reform of Statute 24, I committed to publishing amendments to the draft documents for further consultation with the wider staff community.

Alongside consultation with Trade Unions, we have discussed the proposals for reform with the University Council, Heads of Departments and Senate and have received feedback from them and directly from the staff community. This feedback has led to us proposing a number of amendments to the draft documents originally published. These amendments include more explicit references to academic freedom considerations within the policy framework, changes to provision for investigation (including a greater role for Provost/Registrar in serious or complex cases), moderating the role of the Head of Department in certain cases, clarification of definitions, and strengthening the role of academics from outside a department in disciplinary and redundancy processes.

As such, please find on this page the latest drafts of the policies listed below (with major changes highlighted), together with a timeline for the process:

  • Disciplinary policy and procedure
  • Grievance policy and procedure
  • Redundancy policy and procedure
  • Sickness absence policy and procedure

A revised draft of Statute 24 will be available shortly.

We have also taken the opportunity in light of the comments received and amendments made to the draft policies to update the FAQs, which I would encourage you to read.

Our next all-staff meeting, scheduled to take place on Wednesday 10 May, will be used to discuss proposed changes to Statute 24, alongside updates on key University developments and activities. See further details on the Executive Office web pages.

Once again, we would like to encourage staff to continue to feedback their thoughts and comments regarding the amended proposals, either via their Trade Union or directly to our Employee Relations team via emprelations at warwick dot ac dot uk.

Best wishes,
Christine Ennew, Provost
