Travel Survey

The results of the 2012 Travel Survey were positive overall for the second successive survey and we received a record number of responses. A total of 3,075 staff and students completed the questionnaire - 23% more than in 2010. All three categories, staff, undergraduates and postgraduates, recorded an increase in responses with undergraduates showing the biggest increase (61.5%) and the staff response number representing nearly 35% of all Warwick employees. We would like to thank everyone who responded to the survey.

The results of the survey show a continuous, improving trend, with the University achieving or exceeding 8 out of the 12 targets set for 2013 - one more than in 2010. The results clearly demonstrate that the initiatives and measures implemented from the Travel Plan are having a positive impact and have successfully encouraged staff and students to use alternative and more sustainable modes of transport since the 2005 survey.

The main headlines for each category surveyed over 2010 to 2012 are:

Staff

• Single car occupancy down from 56.6% to 55.8%
• Bus use up from 11.8% to 14.8%
• Cycling up from 8.3% to 9.1%
• Walking up from 3.9% to 4.4%
• Car share drivers down from 8.7% to 7.7%
• Car share passengers down from 4.5% to 3.7%
• Train use down from 3.2% to 2.7%

Undergraduate Students

• Single car occupancy down from 8.7% to 4.1%
• Cycling up from 7.8% to 9.9%
• Walking up from 13.5% to 35.6%
• Car share passengers up slightly from 1.7% to 1.8%
• Car share drivers down from 8.1% to 3.5%
• Bus use down from 59.1% to 43.6%

Postgraduate Students

• Single car occupancy down from 12.4% to 10.6%
• Walking up from 28.3% to 39.5%
• Car share drivers down from 5.6% to 4.7%
• Car share passengers down from 2.8% to 1.5%
• Bus use down from 37.9% to 33.6%
• Cycling down from 10.6% to 8.7%

Traffic Survey

The 2012 Traffic Survey also shows positive results, with a reduction in traffic congestion to and from campus at peak times. Compared to the 2010 Traffic Survey, two-way trips to the University have reduced by 3.6% during the morning peak times and by 8.8% during the evening peak times. This reduction is on top of the reductions reported in 2010 of 18.7% and 21.2% respectively.

Our aspirations and plans to develop the campus will only increase the pressure on sustainable transport to and from the University and it is therefore important that we manage this effectively."
