Warwick Commission on the Future of Cultural Value

warwickcommisionsevent1.jpgOn Tuesday 4 February, the Warwick Commission on the Future of Cultural Value will hold its first public ‘Provocation’ event in the British Library.

BBC Economist, Robert Peston, will give a keynote speech on ‘The Future of the Arts: Are Cuts to Funding the Greatest Threat?’. This issue will then be taken up by an expert panel including the University’s Chancellor and former head of the CBI, Sir Richard Lambert, the Chief Executive of Arts Council England, Alan Davey and Professor of Sociology, Bev Skeggs. The audience will also have the chance to pose their questions via Jane Hill (BBC), who will chair the discussion.

The Warwick Commission on the Future of Cultural Value was set up in Autumn 2013 to stimulate and facilitate a public conversation on how we invest in and value our cultural life. The project brings together high-profile cultural professionals, artists, economists and University of Warwick academics. It aims to engage the public in a new debate on cultural value that will lead to fresh policy thinking on arts and culture. The Commission will report in 2015 with a clear set of recommendations to energise and raise awareness of the contributions that culture makes to individuals, society and the economy.

Crucially, the Commission seeks to engage with the cultural sector at all levels and the 4 February also sees the launch of the Artists’ Commission by Stan’s Cafe. As the Commission’s ‘Artists in Residence’, Stan’s Cafe have been charged with creating an original piece of art for each Provocation. These pieces will tackle the themes and questions of the main Commission and will provide an alternative commentary on its work.
