This year's winners and commendees of the Warwick Awards for Teaching Excellence for Postgraduate Research Students (WATEPGR) have been announced! A huge congratulations to our award-winning PhD students whose teaching has been an inspiration for Warwick students.

About the awards scheme

Now in its second year, the WATEPGR scheme encourages students and staff to nominate PhD students who have gone above and beyond in their efforts to inspire students. Over 130 nominations were received demonstrating a wealth of new teaching talent at Warwick.

The WATEPGR panel selected five winners and five commendees, who will be presented with their awards by Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Education (Innovation, Employability and Widening Participation), Professor Christina Hughes and Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Education, Professor Jan Palmowski at a joint WATE/WATEPGR awards ceremony in the Teaching Grid from 5-7pm on 6 November 2013. Anyone wishing to attend the ceremony to support someone receiving an award should email Christine Smith.

WATEPGR Winners

Congratulations to the five winners of the 2013 WATEPGR Awards! The winners will each receive £500 to be spent on research or teaching.

Selin Cooper, Life Sciences Selin has been a demonstrator for two years in the Microbiology labs as well as being involved in the supervision of student projects and an Undergraduate Research Scholarship Scheme (URSS) mentor. Selin has proven herself to be an exceptional demonstrator. Her inclusive approach ensures that she caters for all students."

Timothy Dodsworth, Law Tim is a seminar tutor for Contract Law, a particularly technical and challenging subject which many students struggle with. His starting point is to bring the subject to life, by encouraging students to evaluate real-life situations and by role-playing scenarios. Role-playing really bring his seminars to life. It’s rare to see a tutor as passionate and caring about his students.”

Jonathan Durham, French Studies It is a testament to Jonathan’s teaching ability that he was asked to be a seminar tutor for a final year module as well as a tutoring first year undergraduates. A kind, considerate, popular and approachable teacher. He has the rare ability to convey even complex ideas in an engaging and clear manner."

Eyre Hover, Engineering Eyre has been teaching since she started her Engineering PhD three years ago and has now been involved in a range of teaching experiences including laboratory sessions, on-site practical skills (Surveying), and developing the teaching skills of other PhD demonstrators. Eyre is an outstanding individual with considerable teaching ability. Her teaching is of a very high standard, very clear and well planned."

Joseph Jackson, English & Comparative Literature Joe teaches on Modern World Literature and is co-convener for the Devolutionary British fiction module and he has received impressive feedback from staff and students. I have no doubt those he has taught will remember his seminars, lectures and other pedagogic interventions as a central part of their time at Warwick. More Joe Jacksons would be awesome."

WATEPGR Commendees

Congratulation to the following PGRs who received commendations in the WATEPGR Awards (pictured left to right): Owen Daniels, Maria Kaparou, Simon Parker, Vicky Turner and Stephen Wright. Each commendee will receive £200 to be spent on research or teaching.
