Domestic spying and surveillance are rarely out of today’s headlines. How does a real-life totalitarian secret police go about watching citizens, shutting down dissent, and ensuring mass obedience?

As part of the Economic & Social Research Council's Festival of Social Science, Prof. Mark Harrison from the Department of Economics will bring modern social science together with historical evidence to show how the KGB, the Soviet Union’s secret police, worked to uphold the communist monopoly of power during the Cold War in a public lecture on Thursday 7 November.
